After the logging
Shirley Steel stands in the scars of the forest that has been stripped for timber. This was eleven years ago. Newnes Plateau. Yes the forest was planted for timber. But I am still allowed to feel great sadness at its demise. Years later they still haven’t done anything with it. Our state government just walked away from it. No rehabilitation. Just weeds of pines growing back. Talks of an airport and a sand mine circulated.
The lone yellow tail cockatoo reminds me of a habitat gone.
Eleven years ago I left TAFE NSW, my permanent government position that I could have kept for life, to work on Len’s School full time. What an amazing time that I have loved what I have experienced so far. Hundreds of students who have blessed me with allowing me to teach them. To help them grow. Sometimes in little ways and in others in huge ways.
It has lead me around the world teaching. And to places I had yet to be to in Australia. Dreams unfolded.
I wonder what the future holds? I am excited to be launching Len’s Journal on the 20th March. Along with the launch of our limited edition magazine comes a new newsletter. If you haven’t signed up for it by then you will cease to hear from me. Details below. Sign up now. Most of you haven’t. 300 out of 2000 subscribers have signed up. You might think I am crazy to let this old list die. But I now know that I only need the ones who are my true fans to follow snd support me. The seventy dollars a month I’ll save will give me a couple more hours of Clair’s time.
Eleven years ago Shirley stood there as a student. Today she stands with me as a peer and teaches with me. The ultimate reward for a teacher is to watch someone blossom and grow. To see her work spread the world. Her success is deserved. She’ll be joining us in our new newsletter and magazine. So you’ll get to see her work if you are not familiar with it. She’ll even grace us with some thoughts on photography and art.
Our new newsletter and magazine is a huge leap away from an individual stream of photographs by Len, to one rich with inspiration from others. We aim to fill you with stunning art. You’ll still get your weekly dose of Len’s Art. But you’ll also get to see the work that inspires me.
Shirley doesn’t teach with me just because she’s a good teacher, it’s because her work is inspiring. I wish to share that inspiration with you.
The new Len’s Journal is going to be something I hope I can inspire you with. We’ll scour the world looking for creative artworks to share with you. Visually rich. Light on words. We are aiming to be the best curated feed of creative photographic art we can be. You can be rest assured that I’ll be using my keen eye to show you the best and most innovative work I can find. Across all the art genres that inspire me.
