I have an exhibition coming up from 30 May to 10 June 2012 at Project Contemporary Artspace in Wollongong. It is titled “Shoreline” and is a series of black & white fine art prints exploring form, tone and texture found during a stroll along the ocean shore. Details are in this exhibition programme page (opening night 6pm Friday 1 June…[Read more]

Just checked out the Sony Nex-7 and the Olympus Om-D, cant decide which way to go, both very nice, both about the same price (with om-d grip – needed). sony has larger sensor, om-d has more lenses etc. Anyone else had a look at these too?

This link is to a direct comparison. The answer lies with the lenses rather than the camera. Which system has the lenses your after, sharpest optics… etc… I have put a fair bit of work into comparing these two, and I can’t find the glass I want in the Sony…[Read more]

Light light light… 1 month, 2 weeks agoIf you want to see some good examples, check out long time photographer Peter Solness’s work. I know severall photographers who have attended his workshops and have been enthralled. Some of his images are beautiful & captivating, however I find others (like tracing around Aboriginal art carvings) to be gimmicky. Check him out here:

Master Class here…
(Nicole, Thea and Len)We unanimously found the first images of the river and the tree captured our attention.
In the first diptych we thought the dark center a little distracting and wondered what they would be like if swapped over
so that the dark edges were on the outside of the frames / pictures to hold the eye into…[Read more]

Hey Ben.. Put each photographer into its own post, so that when we find articles and other stuff about that photographer we can discuss that photographer in the comments for that post…
What lens does Nick use?
-
Hi Len,
ill add them to individual post next time.
The longest lens that Nick uses is a 105mm on his 6×7 camera, everything else is a 50mm, 35mm, 80mm lens etc.

This post belongs in the “Photographers worth looking at” group, but my profile doesn’t seem to allow me to post anything in any of the groups to which I belong, except the “Critiques” group (I’ve tried different browsers, clearing browser caches, etc….all to no avail). So I’m posting this in the general post area.
I’ve listed this…[Read more]

The art of portraiture photography 2 months, 1 week agomy portraiture experience is very limited – usually only to special occasions & mostly my very obliging niece & her children. . .I have no real lighting experience so pretty much just go with the flow! Took these as part of a belly shoot last week with a very ‘clingy 2 year old stealing the show!

Ben, my preference is for the first one. The ”triangles” are already a prominant part of the foreground and don’t really need any enhancing, and the tight vertical crop on the second one leaves me longing for a bit more width to put the shot into context – my 2 cents. Regards, Geoff
-
I am leaning towards the second one… hmmm… i think i prefer the gentler processing of the first one though… I think it is the huge square that I love the most about the second one… the first one has a different subject to the second one.. so in your contemplation think about what the subject is that you wish to talk about with your…[Read more]

wow!
Now without looking at them large I originally preferred the 1st one but when I looked at the them at the max size available the 2nd one really popped out!!
why ? perhaps because the attention is more tightly focused on the textural detail in those foreground rocks in 2nd, rather than the sheer expanse of scene in the first. . ?? -
I prefer the 1st one as I find myself exploring the image more in the foreground because there is more of it and so more lines to follow around.
In the second one I find the foreground more confronting as its darker and more defined, plus your pulled thru the image quickly – is my feeling.
Great image.
